Buddhist monk arrested for treasure hunting

Colombo, Sri Lanka. -- Sri Lanka Police produced a Buddhist monk before Matale magistrate on charges of attempted treasure hunting in a historical site.

The Buddhist monk and his accomplice, a businessman, have blasted a rock using dynamite, the police say.

The land in which treasure hunting took place is a fortress belonged to colonial period, called Fort Macdowell which was built by the British in 1803. It belongs to Matale Sambuddha Jayanthi Sangamaya.

The Buddhist monk was released on personal bail of Rs. 100,000.
