Monks are detained amidst protests in Tibet

by HAROLD MANDEL, The Examiner, AUGUST 8, 2012BY:

Lhasa, Tibet (China) -- The tragic series of self-immolations has continued in Tibet in protest of an increased crack down in the region by Chinese security forces. There has been an escalation of tensions at a monastery where a woman self-immolated in protest of Chinese rule this week.

Radio Free Asia has reported "Protests as Monks Are Detained." Three Tibetan monks from the monastery where the woman self-immolated this week have been detained by Chinese security forces.

Sources have said this has set off protests demanding their release. The police picked up the three monks on suspicion of sheltering Dolkar Tso, 26, who was a Tibetan mother of two who self-immolated near a stupa at the Tso monastery in the Kanlho prefecture on Tuesday.

A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Radio Free Asia on Wednesday: “Last night, at about 10:00 p.m. local time, Chinese police entered the Tso monastery and detained monks Choephel, Sherab, and Tsondru.”

The source went on to say: “Tsondru was released this morning, but at around 5:00 a.m. Chinese police in about a dozen vehicles arrived and tried to detain 17 other monks suspected of bringing Dolkar Tso to the monastery.” The source also said that monks and local residents then mobbed the police while demanding the release of the detained monks. And so deep sadness now pervades the hearts and minds of Buddhists as they await further news about what is going on in Tibet.
