The new rules go into effect October 1. Official approval must be obtained by those wish to shoot TV or film productions. Sculptors must obtain permission to work. Violators may be fined up to a million yuan.
New hotels and other structures which may degrade the cultural legacy are also forbidden. No enlargement or reconstruction of existing residences is permitted. Electric-powered bicycles also are to be forbidden.
Walking is viewed as the best ways to see the island. Mount Putuo is not a large island. It takes about one hour or two to walk from one end to the other. But it's worth the days effort to experience its rich Buddhist culture and scenic view.
The name "Putuo" derives from "Potalaka." That was the mountain residence of Guangyin or the God of Mercy in the Avantamsaka Sutra.
