The Buddhist Channel, Feb 25, 2008
Taipei, Taiwan -- Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation Philippines held charity activities and medical services to provide help for the victims and the poor in the year of 2007. The global warming has caused many calamities in recent years. The environmental protection is one of the efforts made by Tzu Chi volunteers.
Charity mission
Remnants of Typhoon Reming
Faced with disaster ravaged by typhoon Reming at the end of Year 2006, Tzu Chi volunteers provide emergency assistance to the victims through relief distribution, medical mission, disinfection and clean-up activities for the community, provision of water purifying system and donation of disinfecting materials.
In March 2007, Tzu Chi volunteers went back to Bicol (the community of Tabaco, Albay) to hold a three-day large scale medical mission.
Tzu Chi volunteers also plan to reconstruct the roofs and ceiling of Tabaco National High School through a charity bazaar.
Flood in Panghulo, Malabon
When tropical storm Chedeng submerged 70 percent of Malabon City in July, visiting volunteers relied on dinghies to conduct the survey and distribute stubs for the relief distribution. The victims were happy when they received the relief supplies handed over by volunteers.
Relief mission in Dreamland village
Dreamland village is located near a dumpsite in Rosario Cavite. The villagers either scavenge useful materials from the dumpsite or fish from the nearby shore in order to survive. They also have to live through the absence of electricity, lack of clean water.
Tzu Chi volunteers provided free baths and grooming services, relief distribution and free medical consultation, among others. Furthermore, volunteers organize a system for their succeeding visits and gave each selected family a number for future support.
Program for the Homeless In Luneta
In cooperation of the Binondo Volunteer Fire Brigade, Tzu Chi set up two programs in July and in December for homeless brothers. They received baths with clean water, bath essentials, grooming services, medical consultation, medicines, new pairs of reading glasses and gift bags.
Medical services for the poor
Zamboanga Chapter
Prior to the operation of the Tzu Chi Clinic in Sta. Mesa, Tzu Chi Foundation has consolidated its medical force in its Zamboanga Chapter.
After the inauguration of its Rehabilitation Center, Tzu Chi Zamboanga has also completed its Annex-Building. The building aims to restore hope to the lives of children with polio, adults affected with stroke and patients with scoliosis. It's more convenient to those patients.
Donation to EAMC
On August 24, the Tzu Chi Foundation donated additional equipment to the East Avenue Medical Center Burn Unit to further help burn patients.
Global warming awareness
In responding to Global warming, Tzu Chi volunteers also held series of activities to promote awareness and proper treatment to our environment. The activities include collection of recyclables in condo units, street clean-up in manila and trees planting in the area of Ipo Dam (the major source of water for Metro Manila).
Tzu Chi Philippines has been a fort base for years to organize and train volunteers to serve the poor and the victims in the area.
