Bendigo to be home to giant jade Buddha

ABC, August 24, 2007

Bendigo, Australia -- Work has started on carving an 18-tonne boulder of jade into a statue of Buddha for a central Victorian temple.

What is claimed to be the biggest Buddhist stupa in the western world is being built at Myers Flat near Bendigo.

The three-metre jade Buddha is being carved in Thailand and is expected to be ready next February.

Project manager Ian Green says the Buddha will tour parts of the world and Australia for a few years, before being permanently housed in central Victoria.

"It will in our estimation be a wonder of the Buddhist world," he said.

"It will be of enormous interest and create an enormous attraction for people around the world."
