Please explain, Buddhist temple backers told

Independent Weekly, June 25, 2009

Adelaide, Australia -- Proponents of a $15 million Buddhist temple in Adelaide's south have been ordered to detail the spiritual rationale of the project.

The Nan Hai Pu Tuo Temple of Australia is a not-for-profit Buddhist organisation incorporated in 1996 as a religious organisation.

The organisation wants to build a $15 million temple, featuring several shrines and a central 35-metre tall pagoda, on a 55-hectare site in the city's south.

South Australian Planning Minister Paul Holloway said on Thursday the organisation was required to prepare a development report as part of the major development assessment process.

The state's independent Development Assessment Commission had ruled the report was needed after identifying nine issues from the organisation's initial application.

Detailing the spiritual and cultural rationale for the project was among the requirements, in addition to addressing environmental impact and other issues, Mr Holloway said.
