Dalai Lama Talks In Auckland Today

Newswire.co.nz, June 17, 2007

Auckland, New Zealand -- The exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama is expected to address thousands of people in a lecture in Auckland today, but it seems unlikely that his visit to this country will see a formal invitation to see the Prime Minister.

The Dalai Lama will give three public talks during his four-day visit.

The 71-year-old head of Tibetan Buddhism will preach kindness and compassion to those gathered at the Vector Arena this afternoon.

He will also speak in Wellington on Tuesday, where he will meet with leaders of several political parties, including National John Key.

The Dalai Lama met with the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, last week, despite fierce opposition to such contacts from China.

And he spoke with Helen Clark after a chance meeting while she was visiting Australia.

But her office says she simply may not have time for a formal meeting here.
