Burmese government uses Kathina festival to sway senior monks from participating in political activities
Yangon, Myanmar -- The Interior Affairs Ministry of Burma?s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) has issued a directive to all local government departments to offer Buddhist monks with rice and other donations in an effort to appease the monks who are feeling aggrieved by the mistreatments of their fellow monks in Burmese prisons.
The other main reason for the donations at religious festivals, is said to be to extract promise of non involvement of Buddhist monks in political activities, from influential abbots.
