Chiang Mai to be center of Lanna Buddhism

Chiang Mai, Thailand -- The Department of Religious Affair plans to make Chiang Mai the center of Lanna Buddhism study.

Religious Affair Department Director-General Preecha Kanthiya said this concept has been discussed several times between the senior monks in Chiang Mai and officials from the Culture Ministry.

Conclusion has been yielded, where Chiang Mai was deemed to be a center of Buddhism with many temples and historical records of Buddhism. Amongst the prominent Buddhist sites. Mr. Preecha also noted that a Lanna version of Tripitaka exists.

The Religious Affair Department will utilize IT and satellite systems to spread the teachings in Buddhism, with the aim being to expose more Thais and foreigns to Buddhism at a more global level.
