Buddhist Church of Thai Nguyen province holds first Congress

VNA, Dec 22, 2005

Thai Nguyen, Vietnam -- The Buddhist Church of northern Thai Nguyen province elected a 22-member executive board for the 2005-2010 term at its first congress in Thai Nguyen city on Dec. 22.

The executive board of Thai Nguyen Buddhist Church mapped out 10 religious tasks for the coming period, including promoting Buddhist practices, disseminating Buddhism, education of monks and nuns, charity work, expanding international Buddhist relations, and participating in national defence.

The congress reviewed the Buddhist church's religious work of recent years, and discussed a programme of activities for the first term of the Thai Nguyen Buddhist Church.

Buddhism has been maintained and developed in this province over the past 20 years with assistance from local authorities. Thai Nguyen now has 113 pagodas, and more than 37,000 Buddhist followers. All monks and nuns in the province lead a good religious life, take civic responsibility and observe laws, following the precept of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha "Dharma, nation and socialism." Many monks and nuns have set bright examples in charity activities.

Representatives of the Sangha Council, the Executive Council and other units of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha, Buddhist churches of northern provinces, and leaders of local Party organisations, authorities and Fatherland Front committees attended the event.
