VNA, June 23, 2006

CAN THO, Vietnam -- More than 200 representatives of the Khmer Buddhist Theravada branch in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta and southeast provinces joined a conference that opened in Can Tho City on Wednesday.

The two-day conference, hosted by the Government Commission for Religious Affairs and the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council, reviewed two-year activities of the Khmer Buddhist Theravada branch and make amendments to the Viet Nam Buddhist Church’s Charter.

It also aims to disseminate State policies on religious beliefs and launch activities towards the upcoming national Buddhist congress.

Addressing the conference, the Most Venerable Thich Hien Phap, Deputy Chairman and General Secretary of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha’s Executive Council, highlighted the contributions by the Viet Nam Buddhist Church, including nearly 2 million followers of the Khmer Buddhist Theravada branch, to affirm its position at home and abroad over the past 25 years.

Since its first conference in 2004, the Khmer Buddhist Theravada branch has made outstanding progress, the Most Venerable Thich Hien Phap said, adding that more than 450 pagodas of the branch had their seals made and were used to serve Buddhist activities.
