Buddhist leader's 11th death anniversary marked

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam -- The 11th death anniversary of the Most Venerable Thich Duc Nhuan, first leader of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha (VBS), was marked at the Quang Duc Buddhist Institute in HCM City on Wednesday.

Vice Presidents of the VBS's Executive Council, the Most Venerable Thich Tu Nhon and the Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, members of the HCM City Sangha Council and Buddhist Church, and representatives of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front and HCM City Committee for Religious Affairs attended the ceremony.

The Most Venerable Thich Duc Nhuan became chief of the VBS at the conference for the unification of Vietnamese Buddhism in 1981.

He led the VBS from 1981-1992 and was member of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee for many years. He was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Order and the Independence Order, First Class, for great contributions to the country and the religion.
