All Nation Buddhist Congress to open mid December

Ha Noi, Vietnam -- The Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha has announced its plan to open the 6 th national representative congress in Ha Noi on December 13.

The event, which is expected to draw over 1,000 representatives from Buddhist Sangha chapters at all levels, will work out a programme of action for the 6 th Sangha from 2007-2012.

The Congress will elect a new Sangha council and the President. It will also elect representatives to the Executive Council and its Standing Committee, ordain monks and nuns and review the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha Charter.

Buddhist Sangha chapter sets up representative board

Meanwhile, the Yen Bai mountainous provincial chapter of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha have set up its Representative Board on November 25.

The event was attended by representatives from the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha, the Government Commission for Religious Affairs, the North-West Steering Board, the Provincial People’s Committee and the Buddhist congregation of seven northern mountainous provinces.

The province is home to a Buddhist community estimated at a more than 20,000 followers.

The 13-member Representative Board of the provincial chapter thanked the local authorities for creating favourable conditions for followers to practise their faith.

They vowed to encourage Buddhists to promote the traditions of “being kind-hearted, doing good deeds, staying away from crimes and always helping wrong-doers to improve themselves.”
