600 delegates to attend Vesak Buddhist celebration

Hanoi, Vietnam -- The press conference about the United Nations Day of Vesak 2008 in Vietnam VietNamNet Bridge – For the first time a Buddhist concert will be organized during the United Nations Day of Vesak 2008, slated from May 8-13, 2008, in Vietnam.

The event is co-organized by the Vietnamese Government, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, and the United Nations Day of Vesak International Organization Committee (IOC).

“The United Nations Day of Vesak is not only an international religious cultural event, but also an opportunity to advertize the image of Vietnam,” said Bui Huu Duoc, Head of the Buddhist Agency of the Government Religion Committee.

Duoc said 600 international delegations totaling over 4,500 dignitaries and scholars from over 70 countries and territories will attend the United Nations Day of Vesak in Vietnam.

During the United Nations Day of Vesak, international delegates will visit some Buddhist relics of Vietnam like the Bai Dinh pagoda, the largest pagoda in Vietnam, in Ninh Binh province, Yen Tu in Quang Ninh and Ha Long Bay.

The Vesak celebration, the most important Buddhist festival, marks Buddha’s birthday, his attaining Enlightenment and his entry into Nirvana. The festival, known as the Buddha’s Day, aims to spread a message of love, peace, harmony, mercy, and progress to the world.
