Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam -- The Ho Chi Minh City Buddhist Sangha says it plans to continue developing its health network of Tue Tinh Duong Free Clinics for the poor as well as set up schools for orphans and disabled children, a Buddhist dignitary said on July 17.

The municipal Sangha will also offer counselling for local HIV/AIDS carriers in the city’s Binh Thanh district and districts No. 2 and 12, the chairman of the Sangha’s Executive Board, Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, said.

According to the dignitary, the city’s Sangha followers have contributed more than 37.5 billion VND, 15 tonnes of rice and 3,500 cartons of instant noodles for victims of natural disasters in Vietnam as well as in Myanmar and China.

In addition to its charitable work, the Sangha committed to help preserve national fine customs and culture, and eliminate social evils from now to the end of 2008.

The dignitary was speaking at a meeting of local Buddhist dignitaries, monks, nuns and followers in Pho Quang Pagoda to review recent activities.
