Khmer Theravada Buddhist branch convenes third conference

VietnamNet, Oct 7, 2008

Bac Lieu Province, Vietnam -- More than 200 Khmer Theravada Buddhists from the Mekong delta provinces and several southeastern provinces gathered for the branch’s third conference in Bac Lieu Province on Oct. 5-6.

According to reports delivered at the conference, the Khmer Theravada Buddhist branch, with support from the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has printed over 180,000 prayer books in the Khmer language to be delivered to a number of Khmer temples. This print run consisted of 36 separate prayer book titles.

The branch also organised a series of primary Buddhist study courses and established a new Khmer Theravada Buddhist Academy in Can Tho City.

In addition, the branch has restored and developed a number of temples. Bac Lieu Province alone has seen 7 out of its 22 temples repaired using funds allocated from the State budget.

The Khmer temples have been involved in actively contributing to charity in order to help thousands of poor people to build houses and develop businesses.

At the conference, delegates proposed that the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and other authorised agencies pay more attention to the training of monks and nuns and focus on constructing synchronous curricula for primary, secondary and further training courses, thus ensuring adequate quality for enrolment to the Khmer Theravada Buddhist Academy.
