Hoa Hao Buddhists convene third congress

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam -- Representatives from Hoa Hao Buddhist chapters nationwide gathered at An Hoa Tu Pagoda in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang on May 21 for the sector’s third congress for the 2009-2014 term.

In its action program for the third tenure, the Central Executive Board of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect said it would uphold the genuine teachings, contribute more to social and charitable activities, thus joining hands with other religions and people nationwide to build a country with prosperous people, strong nation and equal, democratic and civilized society.

During the second tenure lasting from 2004 to 2009, Hoa Hao Buddhists repaired and built over 5,000 charitable houses for poor people, 549 bridges and 486 km of roads at a total sum of 162 billion VND (9 million USD).

At the congress, Nguyen Van Ton was re-elected as Head of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Sectís Central Executive Board.
