Ancient discovery illuminates Malaysia’s rich past

The Buddhist Channel, 16 March 2024

Archaeologists uncover evidence of Malaysia’s historical significance as a vibrant trading hub. Kedah, Malaysia - - Residents of Bukit Choras, nestled amidst rice fields near a verdant hill in northwest Malaysia, recently discovered an archaeological marvel in their midst.

A team of 11 researchers unearthed the 1,200-year-old Buddhist stupa atop Bukit Choras last August, shedding light on Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage.

Situated in Malaysia’s Bujang Valley, the stupa stands out as a solitary testament to the region's ancient history. Unlike other sites in the valley, which lie to the south, Bukit Choras stands alone on the northern side of Mount Jerai, once a crucial landmark for maritime traders.

Experts speculate about the stupa's purpose, suggesting it may have served as a military outpost or trading center. Further excavation is underway to uncover its full significance.

Initial findings indicate similarities with sites in Java and Sumatra, Indonesia, underscoring Malaysia’s interconnected past.

The discovery, first mentioned in 1850, remained largely unexplored until recent years when modern technology allowed for a thorough investigation. Excavations in 2022 revealed remarkably well-preserved structures, including a nine-meter-long stupa and two stucco Buddha statues with Pallava inscriptions.

These artifacts offer valuable insights into Ancient Kedah, a civilization that flourished between the 2nd and 14th centuries CE. As a hub for international trade and cultural exchange, Ancient Kedah attracted merchants from China, India, and the Middle East, fostering a diverse and vibrant community.

Temples and artifacts found in the region reflect a blend of Buddhist and Hindu influences, highlighting the multiculturalism that defined Ancient Kedah.

Today, Malaysia continues to embrace its rich cultural tapestry, with diverse ethnic and religious communities coexisting harmoniously.

As researchers delve deeper into Malaysia’s past, they aim to promote understanding and appreciation for the country’s diverse heritage.
