KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Buddhists in Malaysia observed Wesak Day on 22 May 2024, honouring the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Siddharta Gautama.

Wesak Day, a public holiday here, involves devotees gathering at Buddhist temples, chanting sutras/suttas, and carrying symbolic Buddhist icons in a procession symbolising purity.

At the Maha Vihara Buddha Temple in Kuala Lumpur, 20 decorated car floats participated in a 12-kilometre procession through Little India, Pasar Seni, Jalan Raja Chulan, and Bukit Bintang.

In Selangor, the Fo Guang Shan Dong Zen Temple in Jenjarom, Kuala Langat, served as a key venue, with devotees beginning to gather at 8 am.

In Melaka, 20 Buddhist centers joined for the Wesak Eve Procession organized by Seck Kia Eenh, marking the 75th anniversary of Wesak as a public holiday and the 60th anniversary of the first procession by Seck Kia Eenh Temple. Thousands of devotees in white, along with more than 20 floats, circled the city.

At the Enlightened Heart Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Tambun, Ipoh, Perak, a large crowd gathered for Wesak. The main highlight was the unfolding of the giant canvas thanka for sunning of the painting, a ritual held once a year during Wesak day.

At the Kinrara Metta Buddhist Society in Puchong, Selangor, Wesak was marked with the theme "Garden Wesak," focusing on the interconnectedness of all living beings and the harmony of the natural world. Visitors offered water to the Bodhi Tree, honoring its significance in the Buddha’s enlightenment.
