"Use Dharma Centres to Learn Buddhism, Do Not Waste Opportunity" - 104th Ganden Tripa

The Buddhist Channel, 20 June 2024

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia -- Jangtse Choejey Kyabje Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin Palsangpo, the 104th Ganden Tripa and head of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, visited the Sakyamuni Dharma Center in Petaling Jaya this morning. This is His Eminence's second visit to Malaysia since 2019.

Approximately 50 people gathered at the Sakyamuni Dharma Center to welcome His Eminence. In his Dharma address, His Eminence urged the audience to use the facilities at Dharma Centres to learn Buddhism.

He emphasized that temples and centres are valuable resources and should not be treated merely as places to visit.

"Use these centres to learn Buddhism. Come to these places to learn from masters and receive teachings from them. Listen, understand the points taught, and put them into practice in daily life. Once you have such knowledge, no one can take it away from you. Learn until you are awakened from ignorance," said Rinpoche.

Ganden Tripa Rinpoche's visit to Malaysia is by invitation from the Losang Dragpa Centre. His Eminence will lead the "Exalted Lion's Roar Chenrezid Jenang" at Losang Dragpa Centre on 22 June 2024 (restricted to those who have taken a highest yoga tantra empowerment).

On 23 June, His Eminence will lead the "White Tara Jenang". For more details on the program for the two days, please visit: [Losang Dragpa Centre](https://fpmt-ldc.org/event/ganden-tri-rinpoche-malaysia-tour-2/).

Who is the Ganden Tripa

The Ganden Tripa (Holder of the Ganden Throne) is the spiritual head of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the founder of the Gelug school, was the first Ganden Tripa. Since then, the lineage has been held by successive Ganden Tripas.

The Ganden Tripa is an appointed office, not a reincarnation lineage. The position is held once every seven years or earlier due to unforeseen events like death. The title is bestowed alternately on one of the two Chojeys – Sharpa Chojey or Jangtse Chojey. The appointment is based on academic merit and hierarchical progression.

Although the appointment of Ganden Tripa is automatic, it is usually confirmed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who publicly announces the appointment or nomination at the time of changeover.

Biography of 104th Ganden Tripa Kyabje Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin Palsangpo

Kyabje Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin Palsangpo was born in Tibet in 1934. He was ordained as a monk at the age of seven. Following His Holiness the Dalai Lama into exile in 1959, he entered Sera Je Monastery, where he was enrolled into Tsangpa Khangtsen at the age of seventeen.

After rigorous study of Buddhist philosophies, he obtained the highest honor of Geshe Lharampa degree in 1979 after debate examinations attended by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other senior Buddhist scholars.

After receiving the Geshe Lharampa degree, he entered Gyume Tantric University and became a master of discipline two years later. Rinpoche also studied the esoteric teachings of the Mahayana tradition extensively while at Gyume Tantric University.

In 1985, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appointed him as the abbot of Gyume Tantric University, a position he held for six years.

Since then, he has taught widely in India and the West. He was also the Spiritual Director at Do Ngak Kunphen Ling Dharma Center in North America.

He was appointed to the position of Jangtse Choje in 2010, placing him second in line for the position of Ganden Tripa after former Sharpa Chojey late Jetsun Lobsang Tenzin at that time.
