The ceremony, which began with Buddhist Chanting and Blessing Ceremony, marked an important milestone for the Maha Karuna Buddhist Society (Kuala Lumpur & Selangor), which was founded in 2001 under the guidance of Chief Reverend B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera.

Officiated by Tourism Minister

The inauguration was officiated by YB Dato Seri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia. In his speech, the Minister expressed his pleasure in opening the new vihara, extending his congratulations to the organizing committee, volunteers, and all parties involved in realizing its construction.

"More than just a place of worship, Maha Karuna Vihara will serve as a center for community unity, sowing the values of love and harmony, and preserving cultural heritage in Malaysia's diversity," the Minister said.

YB Dato Seri Tiong King Sing also welcomed a proposal raised by the organizing chairwoman to promote Maha Karuna Vihara as part of the country's cultural and heritage tourism products. "Tourism is not just a destination, but an experience that reflects Malaysia's identity and uniqueness. Places of worship such as Maha Karuna Vihara bring communities together, promote compassion and mutual understanding, while preserving the cultural heritage that forms part of Malaysia's diverse identity. Culture and heritage must not be left behind in the development of our tourism sector," he added.

He concluded with a blessing for the new centre: "May it continue to serve the community and contribute towards greater harmony, understanding and unity in Malaysia."

A Joyous Occasion for the Buddhist Community



The Maha Karuna Buddhist Society expressed deep gratitude for the Minister's presence and encouragement, particularly his recognition of the vihara's role in community building. They also thanked the respected Sangha members from Malaysia and abroad, representatives from various Buddhist organisations, and Dhamma friends who joined the auspicious occasion.

"We are deeply grateful for the presence of respected Sangha members from Malaysia and abroad, representatives from various Buddhist organisations, and Dhamma friends from near and far who joined us on this auspicious occasion. Heartfelt thanks to all the well-wishers, volunteers and devotees who have walked this journey together and supported the establishment of the Vihara," the Society stated in an address.

VBCM President Extends Congratulations

Bro Chew Eng Ghee, President of the Vajrayana Buddhist Council of Malaysia (VBCM), also conveyed his congratulations via a recorded video message. He recalled Chief Reverend B. Sri Saranankara Nayaka Maha Thera's strong support for VBCM over the years and his many contributions to the wider Buddhist community.

"Whenever a new Buddhist temple is established, it is a joyful occasion for all of us — a place where people can pray, learn the Buddha's teachings and support one another. With Elmina continuing to grow, we hope Maha Karuna Vihara will serve the community and bring people together for many years to come," Bro Chew Eng Ghee said.

A Day of Celebration and Giving

The inauguration ceremony was accompanied by cultural performances, a charity bazaar, and complimentary vegetarian food. Proceeds from the bazaar will support the temple's construction fund and future Dharma, educational, and charitable activities. In conjunction with the inauguration, the Maha Karuna Vihara will host Nine Days of Chanting and Blessing Ceremonies from 8 to 15 August 2026, culminating in the Offering of Requisites to the Maha Sangha on 16 August 2026.
