The Star, April 15, 2007

PENANG, Malaysia -- More than 10,000 pilgrims from 35 Buddhist associations will throng Burma Road to take part in Wesak Day procession on May 1.

Organising chairman Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun said yesterday that this year’s Wesak Day theme is ‘Religious Harmony, Key to Nation Building.’

He said the float and candle light procession over a 7km distance would start from the Malaysia Buddhist Association (MBA) in Burma Road and pass along Jalan Pangkor, Jalan Kelawei, Lorong Burmah, Jalan Burmah, Peel Avenue, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Anson, Lorong Madras before returning to the association.

He said there would also be a Wesak Day eve celebration for devotees to make offerings and take part in the lighting of oil lamp ceremony.

“We have limited funds to meet these expenses. Therefore, we appeal to Buddhists to donate towards the campaign,” he told a press conference.

In conjunction with the celebration, Dr Loh said MBA would organise a series of charity events starting from April 17 to May 26, including blood donation campaigns, offering of food and gifts to Buddhist monks, dharma talks, charity dinner for the underprivileged and handicapped.
