MAGELANG, Indonesia -- Thousands of Buddhists participated in the Asalha Mahapuja procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple on Sunday (14/7/2024). Participants walked while meditating and carrying flowers.
During this year's Asalha Mahapuja procession, the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC) introduced a new golden chariot to transport the Tipitaka. This new chariot was designed by Monk Sri Paññavaro Mahāthera and crafted by Sanggar Nakula Sadewa Magelang, led by I Nyoman Alim Mustapa.
This golden carriage combines cultural elements from ASEAN Buddhist temples and traditions. The procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple featured two golden carriages.
Chairman of the Indonesian Theravada Sangha, Bhante Subhapannyo Mahathera, explained that the meaning of Asalha Mahapuja is a tribute to the great teacher and a form of respect for the greatness of the Buddha.
"And during this carnival, the congregation must take it seriously and concentrate. It is not just a matter of walking around," he said.
Bhante Subhapannyo noted that the number of participants this year exceeded that of last year, with 10,000 Buddhists from all over Indonesia and some from abroad attending Asalha Mahapuja.
Meanwhile, Bhikkhu Sri Pannyavaro Mahathera emphasized that the main goal of the Buddha's teachings is to free us from suffering.
"Suffering arises from desire. If desires are fulfilled, greed arises; if they are not fulfilled, hatred arises. Greed and hatred are the causes of suffering," he explained.
He advised training oneself not to get attached to anything, realizing that everything is impermanent and not worth clinging to.
"Do good deeds selflessly without conditions and avoid bad deeds by maintaining behavior that does not harm yourself or others. Practice meditation so that your mind is clear and wise," he concluded.
