Buddhist Circle of Life Lecture Kicks-Off Global Education Spring Series at Genesee Community College

The Buddhist Channel, April 5, 2012

BATAVIA, NY (USA) -- Wayman Kubicka of the Chapin Mill Retreat Center in Batavia will offer an introduction to Buddhism and the Buddhist perspective with the lecture The Circle of Life through Buddhist Eyes on Thursday, April 12 at 12:30 pm in the Conable Technology Building on the Batavia campus of Genesee Community College.

Wayman Kubicka is an ordained Zen Buddhist priest with the Rochester Zen Center, and with his wife Eryl, oversees meditation training and other programs offered at Chapin Mill. His lecture will focus on the way Buddhists see the world and our human condition, as expressed through their embrace of the Wheel of Life. The brightly colored drawings in the wheel illustrate the essence of the Buddhist teachings of the Four Truths: the existence of earthly suffering, its origin and cause, the ending or prevention of misery and the path to liberation from suffering.

Mr. Kubicka is a Chicago native who helped wounded civilians during the Vietnam War through his affiliation with a Quaker project, and later became involved with the Rochester Zen Center. He moved to Batavia in 2000 to oversee construction of the Chapin Mill Retreat Center, and took over the reins of the center in 2004. Chapin Mill is a 135-acre country property that was donated to the Rochester Zen Center by Ralph Chapin, who was the Chairman and Treasurer of Chapin Industries in Batavia.

Mr. Kubicka's lecture, which is free and open to the public, is in room T119, in the Technology Building.

"We are delighted to have Mr. Kubicka's lecture kickoff a captivating series of events planned for April and May which continues the celebration of our year-long "Circle of Life" program with Global Education," Karin Kovach-Allen, Dean of Human Communications and Behavior said. "This event also recognizes the college's new leadership and vision with the Inauguration of President Sunser on May 5th."

The lecture is part of the year-long "Circle of Life" Global Education program at GCC, which will include a Tibetan photography exhibit in the lobby of the Stuart Steiner Theater and the construction of a sand mandala by Tibetan Monks in the GCC Forum later in April and early May.
