Environmentalist Examines Buddhism and Consumerism

Marlboro College News, Nov 1, 2006

Marlboro, VT (USA) -- Stephanie Kaza, associate professor of natural resources at the University of Vermont, discusses Buddhism and consumerism on Monday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. in Ragle Hall in the Serkin Center for the Performing Arts at Marlboro College.

In The Ecology of Desire: Buddhist Views on Consumerism, Kaza explores the effects of consumerism on the environment and the earth’s ecosystems, and whether traditional Buddhist perceptions of contentment and moderation can be applied in today’s materialist world. She examines the possibilities of using religion to inform environmental choices.

Kaza, editor and co-editor of several collections including the recently published Hooked! Buddhist Writings on Greed, Desire, and the Urge to Consume, is the author of "The Attentive Heart: Conversations with Trees". Her teaching focuses on environmental ethics, religion and ecology, ecofeminism and deep ecology.

Currently President of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies, Kaza is actively involved in the American Academy of Religion. She received the University of Senior Class Council award, the Spirit and Nature award, and the Templeton Foundation award, among others.

Kaza earned her Ph.D. in biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz; her M.A. in education from Stanford University; her M.Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry; and her B.A. in biology from Oberlin College.

The Marlboro College Monday Night Lecture Series is free and open to the public. It is funded by the Lucius N. Littauer Foundation, the Thomas Thompson Trust, the Vermont Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities and an anonymous donor.
