"The human mind, all minds are deeply connected," said fellowship member G.R. Lewis. "There's an interconnection where all minds are interconnected in a very deep way."
The connectedness of the mind can be used to affect people's surroundings, Lewis said. He and other members of the fellowship hope to use their energy to help bring about world peace.
The event is similar to a walk-a-thon in that participants get sponsors that offer donation amounts based on how long the participant actually meditates. The money raised will help build a center for the fellowship.
Specific designs for the center have not been made yet, Lewis said. But there will be an inspirational area for meditation and practice, a book store and library and classrooms for Sunday School and other classes.
So far, the fellowship has raised between $7,000 and $8,000 for the center.
Jeffrey Zyjeski plans to meditate for the full eight hours, which will consist of sitting and walking meditations. Other fellowship members will join him in half hour and hour segments, he said. He has been meditating for 12 years.
"I don't know if you're ever really good at it," Zyjeski said. "My mind races all the time, but you get into a silence that allows you to send out kind thoughts."
The meditation-thon will take place in Buddha House, at Wesleyan University at 356 Washington Street. For more information contact Lewis at (860) 529-2933.
