Thai tradition is believed to bring good fortune

Bolivia, NC (USA) -- Blessing businesses is big in Thailand culture, and Parinya Popra is pleased her eatery will finally get a visit Monday from Buddhist monks.

The event, which begins at 9 a.m. and ends about 2 p.m. at Supannahong, will have religious leaders in attendance from Wat Carolina Buddhajakra Vanaram, a Thai Buddhist Monastery in Bolivia, N.C.

"It is a tradition for them to come and give blessings,'' said Joy Kanyika, Popra's mother who works with her at the Socastee eatery. "The [visit] is supposed to give you success and good business. Friends, family and customers attend.''

However, Kanyika said the ceremony will be devoid of her and her family wearing traditional Thai clothing.

"We will dress normal,'' she said. "The costumes are hard to sit down in because they are too fancy. You have to sit straight, and you can't bend over. You can't cross your legs or anything.''

Food from the menu, which includes Pad Thai (a flat rice noodle that is stir-fried with chicken, egg, Thai sauce, bean sprouts and scallions with crushed peanuts sprinkled on top), will be served.

Before the monks arrive Monday though, Supannahong, at 4505-C Socastee Plaza on S.C. 707, will have its grand opening 5 p.m. tomorrow.

"We opened August of last year, and we were waiting for everybody to get together,'' said Popra, a Thailand native.
