Spence to lead Zen retreat at Great Tree temple

WEAVERVILLE, NC (USA) -- Nancy Spence, a Buddhist lay minister, will lead Anattasati Magga Practice Day, a daylong retreat at Great Tree Zen Temple near Weaverville.

The day includes morning, midday, evening and mealtime services along with silent seated and walking meditation. Also scheduled are work periods, creating the opportunity to take the mind of meditation into daily activity. The single day offers a chance to sample what a longer retreat would be like, as well as to strengthen one's practice.

Spence is founder and teacher of Anattasati Magga, Inc., a Zen Buddhist sangha for lay practice. Spence began lay training in 1977 and entered priest training at Vichara Bodhiyana Monastery in California.

She completed a master of science in psychology in 2001, and is the author of two books: “The Tibetan Book of the Dead: An Adaptation for Reading Aloud to the Dead,” and “Back to Basics: An Awareness Primer.” Spence also has a private counseling practice and facilitates personal-growth groups through InnerVision.

Cost of the retreat is $35. For questions or to register, call 828-645-2085 or go to info@greattreetemple.org.
