Brevard, North Carolina (USA) -- Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastic University in Karnataka, India, held an opening ceremony Monday morning as part of their cultural visit to Brevard College.

Through Wednesday, the monks will create an interfaith sacred mandala using grains of colored sand. Public viewings of the mandala are 9 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. today and Wednesday. The monks also will present a world peace and healing puja at 7 p.m. today at Scott Concert Hall. During the puja, the monks will chant prayers and perform rituals, accompanied by symbolic hand gestures and instruments.

A closing ceremony will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, during which the sands from the mandala will be released into King’s Creek.

The events, which are being held at the college’s Porter Center for Performing Arts, are free and open to the public. A donation is suggested. For more information, visit www.brevard.edu/buddhistmonks.
