Buddhist group to teach meditation at Fairmount Hall

Grand Junction, Colorado (USA) -- What do people do, exactly, when they meditate? The principles of meditation will be taught in Grand Junction by Mark Mindenhall, a senior student at the Avalokiteshvara Buddhist Center in Denver.

Since May, Mindenhall, has been coming monthly to the valley to teach meditation workshops.

Meditation is for people of any religious affiliation, said Eric Reinke, the center’s educational program coordinator.

Topics covered will include how to sit; how to prepare the mind; what to focus on; and how to oppose obstacles that come up.

People encounter obstacles both in meditation, and in creating and maintaining a practice, Reinke said. The course is designed to give people tools to overcome those obstacles.

Mindenhall will also talk about the benefits of meditation, Reinke said.

Mesa State College student Ashley Mates is one of those who can attest to those benefits.

As a member of the MSC International Relations Club, Mates sponsored the center’s meditation classes at the college before the workshops moved into Fairmount Hall, 2511 N. 12th St.

“Since I started meditating I’ve become more calm. Things don’t bother me so much,” Mates said.

The classes are great for beginning level meditators, Mates said.

The class will be held Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $30.

People may register via PayPal on the Web site at www.meditationincolorado.org.

Registration is required by Sept. 11.
