Free festival will serve as open house for facility

Deseret, Utah (USA) -- More than a decade ago, Jerry Gardner and Jean LaSarre Gardner started a Tibetan Buddhist temple in their basement. It has since expanded into, perhaps, the area's only such free-standing temple.

Today, the Urgyen Samten Ling Gonpa Tibetan Buddhist Temple and Red Lotus School of Movement, 740 S. 300 West, is holding a Lotus Festival celebration of the third anniversary of the opening of the current location.

The free festival from 5 to 9 tonight will serve as an open house for the temple and its services, from teaching Buddhist tradition to traditional Tibetan dance and martial arts.

"All are welcome to come and ask questions," said Jerry Gardner, whose Buddhist title is Lama Thupten.

Buddhist relics will be on display. And Jean LaSarre Gardner said the event will showcase the temple's services along with the dance and martial arts styles taught at the School of Movement. There will be traditional Tibetan dance and demonstrations of T'ai Chi, Wing Chun Kung-fu, Iaido Swordsmanship and Kendo.
