Author and expert will speak on Shin Buddhism

Honolulu, Hawaii (USA) -- A visiting Buddhist scholar will describe "The Shin Buddhist Way of Life in Contemporary Society" next Saturday in a free public lecture series.

Takamaro Shigaraki, former president of Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan, will speak at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, 1727 Pali Highway. The program will feature a 9:30 a.m. talk on "Fostering Heart and Mind" and a 1 p.m. talk on "Following the Shin Buddhist Way." Lunch will be served.

Shigaraki is now president of the Buddhist Promotion Society, Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai. He has published several books in Japanese on Shin Buddhism.

The annual Futaba Kenko Memorial Lecture Series is named for an author and pioneer in engaged Buddhism who died in 1995. It was endowed by Alfred Bloom, a retired University of Hawaii professor and Hongwanji minister.
