Tibetan Buddhists to host Prayers for Compassion

The Salt Lake Tribune, June 27, 2008

Salt Lake City, Utah (USA) -- Beginning on Thursday night at 7 p.m., Tibetan Buddhist practitioners and friends will recite prayers and mantras nonstop for peace and compassion for a continuous 67 hours. It is the second annual Prayers for Compassion hosted by Urgyen Samten Ling, Salt Lake City's Tibet Buddhist Temple at 740 S. 300 West.

These mantras (or prayers) will be dedicated to all sentient beings, with the hope of increasing causes for happiness while decreasing the causes of suffering.

In addition, the event will celebrate the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 1989 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, as well as raise funds for the continuation of temple activities.

The public is invited to participate in Prayers for Compassion and/or may contribute to the temple by sponsoring a set of mantras - a penny a prayer ($1 for 100 mantras, $50 for 5000 mantras, etc.), and these tax-deductible pledges may be brought to the event or given online at www.urgyensamtenling.org. Last year, more than 1.2 million mantras for loving-kindness and compassion were recited.
