Bodhi Day and family event open to public

Honolulu Star Bulletin, Dec 7, 2008

Honolulu, Hawaii (USA) -- Isle Buddhists will mark the foundation of Buddhism 2,500 years ago with services next week. They are open to the public.

The Hawaii Buddhist Council will sponsor the Bodhi Day event at 9 a.m. tomorrow at the Nichiren Mission of Hawaii, 33 Pulelehua Way. The Rev. Shingyo Imai, resident minister of the Nichiren Mission of Hawaii, will be guest speaker.

A Bodhi Day service will be combined with a family fun day Dec. 14 at Moiliili Hongwanji Mission, 902 University Ave. The 9 a.m. service will be followed with a hands-on craft project to make candles or Bodhi leaf cards. There will be a bouncy castle for children. The American Diabetes Association will present a health fair after 10:15 a.m.

Buddhists around the world mark Dec. 8 as the date Shakyamuni Buddha achieved enlightenment. According to legend, the young Indian nobleman who founded the Buddhist philosophy was seated beneath a bo or bodhi tree when meditation led him to the state of perfect mental clarity.
