Ottawa Declares May 2026 Buddhist Heritage Month

The Buddhist Channel, 2 May 2026

OTTAWA -- The City of Ottawa, Canada has officially proclaimed May 2026 as Buddhist Heritage Month, beginning today, 1 May 2026. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe made the declaration official under the theme “Building a Universal Sense of Belonging Together,” a powerful nod to the Buddhist values of compassion, mindfulness, and inclusivity.

The proclamation was met with strong support from Prime Minister Mark Carney, who released a statement calling the month a key opportunity for all Canadians to honor Buddhist history, culture, and the significant contributions of the nation’s Buddhist community.

“This is a meaningful moment for Canada,” Prime Minister Carney said, specifically thanking organizers for their dedication to celebrating the diversity that enriches the country.

A Decade of Advocacy

The victory in Ottawa is the culmination of nearly a decade of grassroots advocacy. The initiative was first pitched on Parliament Hill during Canada’s 150th-anniversary celebrations in 2017 by Visita Sirin Leelaratna, the founder and chairman of Vesak in Ottawa, Sirin Park Eco Tour, and Buddhist Embassy Canada.

“Your kindness has turned this vision into a reality for all Canadians,” Leelaratna said following the announcement, acknowledging the “heart, hustle, and advocacy” required to bring the project to fruition over the last ten years.

National Momentum Builds

While the municipal declaration is a significant milestone, organizers are already looking toward Parliament Hill. House of Commons Petition e-6893, initiated in Ottawa and sponsored by Member of Parliament Jenna Sudds, has gathered 3,102 verified signatures calling for May to be formally designated as Buddhist Heritage Month across the entire country.

“Shoutout to MP Jenna Sudds for doing this wonderful work for the Buddha Dhamma,” Leelaratna stated, highlighting the political push at the federal level.

Advocates note that Canada already has federally recognized heritage months for Hindu, Sikh, Islamic, and Jewish communities. A national Buddhist Heritage Month would ensure that the more than 350,000 Buddhist Canadians - who contribute to every sector of society - receive similar recognition.

Buddhism in Canada

Buddhism has a long history in Canada, spanning more than a century. It first arrived with Chinese labourers working in the territories during the 19th century, but modern Buddhism is largely traced to Japanese immigration in the late 1800s. The first Japanese Buddhist temple was established in Vancouver in 1905, with the Jōdo Shinshū branch becoming the most prevalent form for decades.

Growth and Diversity

The faith saw substantial expansion in the latter half of the 20th century following changes to Canada’s immigration policies, which allowed larger communities from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Korea, Tibet, and Southeast Asia to settle in the country. Today, all three major traditions - Theravada, Mahayana (including Zen and Pure Land), and Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhism) - are represented across nearly 500 organizations in Canada.

Demographics

According to the 2021 census, there are 356,975 Buddhists in Canada, representing approximately 0.8% of the population. The largest concentrations are found in Ontario (163,750), British Columbia (90,620), and Quebec (52,390). This number is a slight decrease from 2011, but the community remains a vital part of Canada’s religious and cultural mosaic.

Significance of May

The selection of May aligns with Vesak (or Buddha Day), the holiest month for Buddhists worldwide. Vesak commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Gautama Buddha, making it the most spiritually significant time of the year for the faith community.
