Support comes despite Heritage Community Association concerns Temple won't be required to give away food through another organization

Regina, Saskatchewan (Canada) -- Regina City Council could be approving the construction of a Buddhist temple at their next meeting despite concerns from the Heritage Community Association.

The temple would go up at 12th Avenue and St. John Street, the former Disabled Veteran's Association hall.

Planning and Sustainability Director Bob Bjerke says the community association is worried about them giving away food the monks don't eat.

"It is sort of an offering to the community of the extra food; they're not offering it as a food service as others. Certainly the comments have been provided that perhaps a desireable way for them to provide that would be through some of the other social services organizations in the neighbourhood."

There are at least four of those groups that regularly provide food to the needy.

Representatives from neither the temple nor the Community Association were present at Wednesday's Planning Commission meeting. The commission voted unanimously to recommend the Council approve the application.
