The hospital has been successful using deep brain stimulation (DBS)
surgery to treat the disease. The announcement was made on Thursday, the eve of World Parkinson's Disease Day.
The hospital has treated 110 patients with Parkinson's disease or other movement disorders using the DBS surgery, with a 100 percent success
rate. As a result, the hospital has now become a center in Asia for teaching the DBS method.
The treatment implants electrodes in the patient's brain at the precise
location where nerve signals generate the tremors associated with
Parkinson's.
The electrodes are then connected to a neural stimulator,
which sends electrical impulses into the brain to block the abnormal activity that causes the tremors.
