Dalai Lama to Address Senior Buddhist Leaders Amid Reflections on Rebirth and Legacy

Dharamshala, India -- As the 14th Dalai Lama prepares to mark his 90th birthday on July 6, His Holiness will convene with senior Buddhist teachers and spiritual leaders this week during a special three-day gathering in Dharamshala. The deeply anticipated event, infused with both spiritual significance and global attention, comes as followers await guidance on the sacred question of his future reincarnation.

For the Tibetan Buddhist community, the concept of tulku — the reincarnation of enlightened masters — is central to the continuity of spiritual leadership and compassionate service. The Dalai Lama, whose presence in exile has inspired millions since his journey from Tibet in 1959, has long maintained that his rebirth will not be subject to political interference.
“Reincarnation is a spiritual matter,” His Holiness has said in previous teachings. “It should be decided by the person concerned, and not by political authorities.” He has reiterated that his successor will not be born under Chinese control and has encouraged the faithful to reject any state-appointed claimant.
China, which views the Dalai Lama as a separatist despite his long-standing commitment to nonviolence, continues to assert its right to control the process of selecting his reincarnation. But many see this as a profound misunderstanding — or willful misappropriation — of a sacred tradition.
“China is attempting to politicize the sacred,” said Ms. Dolma Tsering Teykhang, Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile. “While it tries to discredit His Holiness on the world stage, it is simultaneously laying the groundwork to manipulate the reincarnation process — a move we cannot accept.”
She added, “The reincarnation of the Dalai Lama is not merely about Tibet. It is a question tied to the preservation of a spiritual lineage that serves all of humanity. His next birth is for the benefit of all sentient beings.”
His Holiness, who was recognized as the incarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama at the age of two, has said he will consult with senior monastics and trusted advisors before making any public statement about the next Dalai Lama. Speculation continues that the future incarnation could be found in India, where the Tibetan spiritual leader has lived in exile for more than six decades.
This week’s gathering in Dharamshala is expected to be both solemn and hopeful — a moment to reflect on a lifetime of spiritual service, and to seek clarity on how the light of the Dharma will continue to shine for generations to come.
As followers around the world prepare to celebrate His Holiness’s 90th birthday, many do so with a deep sense of devotion — and quiet readiness to receive his wisdom on the future.
