HURPES condemns the beating of monks in Myanmar protest

The Buddhist Channel Sept 28, 2007

Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) has condemned the use of force and suppression from the security forces in the protest rallies organised by Buddhist monks against Myanmar military government.

HURPES releasing a press statement on Thursday demanded an immediate release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to restore the democratic government respecting the rights of the Myanmar people.

The statement signed by Hemkanta Chaulagain, general secretary of HURPES, has requested the international community, specially the neighboring countries, to make an effort to replace the military government in Myanmar with a democratic one.

The protests were triggered in the recluse South East Asian nation as the government there decided to double the price of fuel last month, hitting the impoverished people hard.
