Emergency Fund for Burma set up

The Buddhist Channel, Oct 2, 2007

A group of Burmese activists based in Thai-Burma border today set up a "Emergency Burma Fund" to support humanitarian assistance for the peaceful demonstrators in Burma.

Since last week, the military has brutally reacted to protesters in all over Burma. Both monks and civilian protestors have received harsh beatings at the hands of armed police and soldiers. Hundreds have been arrested in pre-dawn raids of homes and monasteries
nationwide.

Further aggression is expected in the next few days as the government seeks to re-establish authority in the country's urban centers. As the violence continues to escalate the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Scarce resources are rapidly
diminishing and the people inside need support.

"This fund will be used for essential supplies including medicine, food, drinking water, and robes for peaceful demonstrators in Burma. Transparency and accountability are of utmost concern and we guarantee that we will work to the best of our abilities" says Aung Myo Min, one of the group members of the Emergency Burma Fund who also run a similar relief program for Burmese effected by the Tsunami in southern part of Thailand.

Members composed of  a group of volunteer people who have been working for human rights and peace in Burma since 1988. and are in constant communication with those inside Burma.
