Charismatic Lama Ole Nydahl Passes Away at 85

The Buddhist Channel, 19 May 2026

IMMENSTADT, GERMANY -- Lama Ole Nydahl, one of the most influential, charismatic, and intensely debated figures in the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to the West, has left his earthly form. According to an official statement from the Diamond Way Buddhist Sangha, Nydahl passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026, surrounded by family, friends, and students at the Europe Center in Germany. He was 85.

His lineage holder, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje, expressed profound gratitude for Nydahl’s life, urging students "not to focus on the person or the form of the teacher, but on his or her practice, on his or her essence," and to honor his legacy through courage and devotion.

"In a completely natural and peaceful way – marked as always, by immense love and strength – he passed away surrounded by his family at the Europe Center where many of his students and friends from around the world had gathered to meditate together."
- Official Sangha Statement, May 18, 2026

Biography: From Hippie Trail to the Diamond Way

Born in Denmark in 1941, Ole Nydahl’s early life was marked by a fiercely rebellious spirit, a love for boxing, and an active participation in the 1960s counterculture.

His life took a radical turn during his honeymoon in 1968, when he and his late wife, Hannah Nydahl, traveled to Nepal. There, they became among the very first Western disciples of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje - the head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Recognizing the couple's immense energy and connection to Western minds, the 16th Karmapa tasked them with bringing the Vajrayana teachings back to Europe. For over five decades, Ole Nydahl lived out of a suitcase, traveling the globe almost continuously to deliver lectures, lead intense Phowa (conscious dying) meditation courses, and establish an empire of practitioners.

The Bright Side: An Unparalleled Legacy of Transmission

To his supporters, Lama Ole was a force of nature and a modern-day Mahasiddha. He was credited with introducing tens of thousands of Westerners to the Buddha Dharma.

- Global Infrastructure: He successfully founded over 650 Diamond Way Buddhist centers worldwide, spanning Europe, the Americas, and Russia.
- Democratizing the Dharma: He presented traditional, complex Tibetan practices in a highly accessible, secularized framework, stripped of Eastern cultural baggage, making it practical for modern householders.
- Devotion and Resilience: His physical stamina, unyielding fearlessness, and deep personal warmth inspired an intense, lifelong loyalty among his students.

The Shadows: A Lightning Rod for Controversy

While Nydahl's achievements are historic, his unorthodox methods and vocal political opinions frequently put him at odds with mainstream Buddhist communities, academics, and human rights organizations.

- Political Rhetoric: Nydahl was widely criticized for making explicitly Islamophobic statements, often framing mainstream Islam as a threat to Western democratic freedoms. These remarks forced several national Buddhist unions to distance themselves from him, arguing his views violated the core Buddhist principles of universal compassion and non-harm.
- Unorthodox Style: Presenting himself in a "Viking" persona - complete with leather jackets, a history of skydiving, and open celebration of sexuality - he rejected traditional monastic aesthetics. Critics often raised concerns over a perceived cult of personality within Diamond Way and his hyper-masculine teaching style.
- Lineage Politics: Nydahl played a central and highly combative role in the controversial 17th Karmapa split, vehemently supporting Thaye Dorje against Ogyen Trinley Dorje (who was recognized by the Dalai Lama), deeply entrenching his organization in internal Tibetan sectarian politics.

Funeral and Memorial Information

As the international Sangha enters a period of deep meditation to honor their teacher's transition, the Diamond Way leadership has released the initial arrangements for those wishing to pay their last respects:

- Location: The International Diamond Way Europe Center in Immenstadt, Allgäu, Germany.
- Observations: The center is currently hosting quiet days of meditation to stabilize the field of blessing following his passing.
- Public Respects: Following these initial quiet days, an open opportunity will be provided at the Europe Center for students, friends, and members of the public to pay their final physical respects.
- Condolences: For those unable to travel, the worldwide Sangha has set up a dedicated digital channel for messages of remembrance at condolences@diamondway-buddhism.org.

As the incense smoke rises, the Buddhist world reflects on a teacher who was undeniably an influential figure of Western Dharma transmission - a man who leaves behind an immense global community, a highly structured legacy, and a complex tapestry of fierce devotion and unresolved debate.

May his consciousness find swift transition into the pure land of Dewachen (Tibetan name for Sukhavati, the “Blissful Realm” or Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha).
