Professor wins Birla Foundation award

New Delhi, India -- Professor R.S. Tripathi has been awarded the Shankar Puraskar for 2007 which carries a cash award of Rs 1,50,000 (US$ 3,760). This award is given to honour an outstanding work published in Hindi on Indian philosophy, culture and art during the last 10 years.

Tripathi has been selected for the honour for his work Baudh Darshan Prasthan. He was selected for the award by a committee headed by

Prof Sibesh Bhattacharya, former head of the department of ancient history, culture and archaeology, Allahabad University.

Tripathi has devoted his entire life to study rare and unknown facets of Buddhist literature. He was the dean at Sampoornand University for three decades. He also translated the original Buddhist granth from Bhot language to Sanskrit. He has studied both Pali and Sanskrit.

His book Boudh Darshan Prasthaan is a work in Hindi explaining Buddhist philosophy. He has extensively used Tibetan sources in the compilation of this book, the foundation further stated.
